Have you ever listed what do you read from you wake up until you are already at the office or workplace? If you have time to sit and think, list what you have read in the last five hours, in any language. They could be newspaper, magazine, signage, bus number, leaflet, telephone directory, application letter, letters, emails, notes, street map, timetable, billboard, menu, ingredients, label on medicine, text message, whatsapp, line, google, and/or facebook. These prove that we have the willing to read and need to read something which gives us message even though there is a variety of reasons for reading. At least, we have read.
Yesterday afternoon, I opened my facebook and had a very amusing posting from a friend, YenYen, in Singapore. Of course, it was eager me to read and even to join answering her question. She asked, "What do birds give out during Halloween night?". Some answered correctly but some were not. Then, I tried to find the answer through 'uncle' google. It derived me to this web: spoonful.com/halloween/halloween-jokes. I read it and found the answer. It was 'trick or tweet'. After replying to my friend's facebook, I returned back to that web and continued reading all the jokes there. They were funny and fun.
Furthermore, I dragged the questions and got this one. "What was the witch's favorite subject in school? --SPELLING--. Suddenly, it was like linking me with my prior knowledge. I thought I ever read which is similar with what the joke meant. Again and again, I remembered that it was from facebook. It was posted by my Ph.D. student friend, Lita, at our group named Forum Diskusi Mahasiswa S3 Pendidikan Bahasa Inggris 2011 UM (Ph.D. Student Discussion Forums 2011 State University of Malang English Education). She posted, "If two witches watched two watches, which witch would watch which watch?". Finally, I got the reason why the witch's favorite subject in school was spelling.
As a start-up of my blog, I would like to share that what we have read so far, so long, even just the simple ones; however, they form our schemata or prior knowledge to the organized definition and concept. Nuttall (1996) sates that schemata are molded from a mental structure and abstract thing which relates to experience. Out of such kinds of assumption, our minds then try to organize the knowledge we have got from our experiences which then enable us to interpret texts. This is what every human has; schema (singular) or schemata (plural), i.e. useful ways of thinking in organizing experience. We are so grateful to be equipped with this brain and mind.
So, never stop to try to read, to link what we read ... even it is a simple thing.
Be blessed and be blessing.
Cheers,
Natalia C.

Hi Billy,
DeleteI am so glad that you like reading my first writing. Hope it inspires you to read and write. Moreover, it will improve your English too.
Thank you, Billy.
Be good and nice to that "The Black Witch"?
Cheers,
Natalia C.
Hi, Mam nice blog..love it ^_^
DeleteBut maybe next time you can use automatic hyperlink feature available in blogger to provide better link approach...hehehehe
Since it seems that URL "http://spoonful.com/halloween/halloween-jokes." resulted in broken link because there is a "dot" behind the URL...
Hi Dita,
DeleteThank you. You are a professional in it. That is why, you are not my student anymore but my colleague now.
Thank you.
Cheers,
Natalia C.
This kind of discussion is always interesting.
ReplyDeleteWith current level of IT, we could read almost anywhere. Google Playbook from Playstore provide paid and free based e-books. I also subscribed Huffington Post everyday through e-mail. Sometimes some people think reading is boring since there are less graphic in them (except visual novel :) ).
Sometimes I use "Text to Speech" feature when I am lazy to read something haha
Hi Rizki,
DeleteThank you for your comment and interesting thing to share about reading.
I agree with you and I am researching about graphic representation or visualization in reading now. This is the reason why I become more and more interested in reading. I would love to help those who want to improve their life through reading. Let reading becomes a part of people's lives, especially a part of our kids' lives.
Cheers,
Natalia C.
Reading is fun for me, but it is very time consuming. I've seen a commercial on seminar how to read one page or book in one second only. I dont know if it works, but i think it is worth to see.
ReplyDeleteAnyhow, congratulations on starting up ur blog mam. Try to join some group or forum to gain more reader.
Hi Joned,
DeleteYes, that's true. It becomes so much fun when the reading is interesting and in line with your interest. That kind of reading technique introduced in that seminar is using what it is called Speed Reading. It doesn't care much on the comprehending the text but at least you understand it. It is like skimming the text. For example, you are in the bookstore and you are interested in a book. You want to buy it. But before you buy it, you skim it to get your understanding on it by reading the book review behind it or the whole book (when there is a sample of it).
Thank you for suggesting me about joining some groups or forums to have more readers. If you know one(s), please share.
Cheers,
Natalia C.

I've learned a lot by read your post.
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting to get the answer "trick or treat" to the question "What do birds give out during Halloween night?" :) But I am wondering why?
Dear Sally,
DeleteThat is what we call joke. The answer of 'treat' with its pronunciation /triːt/ can be teased into 'tweet' /twiːt/ as the sound of birds. That's the rich of language.
Thank you, Sally.

Natalia C.
Dearest Natalia,
ReplyDeleteSorry it took me so long to get back to you, I've been so busy these past few weeks I've hardly had any time myself at all! Firstly, welcome to the blogging world. I'm sure you must really enjoy writing and penning out your thoughts here.
And to answer your blog question here, no, I've never really listed down the books I've read in a day but reading your post has made me realized that I, REALLY REALLY need to catch up on some reading myself. Thanks a lot for the reminder. I'd also like to mention something I've once read before : Read something that you don't like reading. I'm currently trying to do that and it really is quite a challenge. But, it also opens my mind to a whole new world so it isn't so bad after all is it? :)
Keep writing, Natalia. Whenever I have the time I'll pop in and read what you've written. Take care, and all the best on your blogging journey!
Warm regards,
Ratna
Dear Ms. Ratna,
DeleteI am so happy to have your comments here. It is great to know also that you are there busy with all the staff that you are believed to do and finish them. I am here too but I have to push myself to read and write. I am so grateful to have Pak Willy A. Renandya to be my mentor.
Let us support and remind each other to read and write...especially for me the new comer :D . However, for me, it is better late than I never try to start it. When we have started it, we believe that it will be a huge investment for us.
Thank you for everything.
Hope the best for your work and also your blog.
Please share me what you've written too.
Be blessed and be blessing.
Cheers,
Natalia C.
